My Dearest Julia
I am happy to say to you to night that I will start home the last of this week. I will stop one day at Culpepper + 1 day at Lynchburg and then for home. “home-sweet home be it ever so humble their [sic] is no place like home” I assure you I am tired of the Army it is too hard of a life for me. The mud (when the ground is not covered with snow like is now) is from 3 to 12 inches deep. I went to the Battle field of the 21st yesterday a distance of six miles + it snowing very hard all day and on foot at that I was anxious to get a walking stick. tomorrow I have to go to the 2nd + 11 Geo Regts 3 or 4 miles off I pass by Bull Run Battle ground I will stay all night with one of the Regts. and so soon as I can arrange my matters I will start home. The Regt expected to have been paid off to day, but from some cause it is postponed it till the 18th ult. Col Charles said one of one of us might go home as business is very dull and I told him to please let me go and he said he certainly would give way to me. So you may look for me the last of next week so you had better kill a chicken + churn and have all things in readiness for I am coming if the good being spars [sic] my life. I want to see you primped up like you was Young and expected to be married in a few days Oh, in my anxiety I forgot to inform you that I recd both your letters one by Mr Sharp and the other by mail dated 23 Julia you have no conception of the great joy I had in hearing from home please accept my most sincere thanks. it does afford me so much pleasure to hear from you your letters are so interesting and direct from home, from my good wife. That does so much to render me happy + contented in passing through this world of Sin + sorrow. I was truly glad to hear Ma staid so long with you I know the hours was not so long + tedious. but I was sorry to hear that her health was not good. That rough road is enough to kill one of her age, particularly in the winter I recvd your letter from Sam this morning tell him I would have answered it bit I will be home so soon I did not consider it necessary Julia the matter you spoke of in your letter we will talk over when I get home my best Respects to all. tell the Children Pa will soon be home. I must close—
Your devoted Husband
