From the Archives: Civil War Letter

Camp Marion
    Near Yorktown Va
        Feb 20st / 62

Dear Father + Mother I seat my self this evening to drop you a few lines to let you know where I am I will leave this place tomorrow for Richmond But I do not know what I shall do when I get there as I understand the city is crowded with people and getting lodging there is considered almost impossible Alvin and the boys are all well and in fine spirits
Mr. Reagin arrived here today from Dekalb he having been on the Road Eight days in consequence of having missed the Connection His boxes are not here but will be here tomorrow you [and Ma – words struck out] wanted me to write ho Alvin was getting along I can tell you he is as fat as a pig. I did not expect to find him in as good health as he is He weighs 146 lbs just 20 lbs heavier than I am you wanted to know why my letters were mailed at churchland. We have a man a merchant to carry our mail from our Reg to Portsmouth He has a P. O. at his store consequently he mails all the letters at his P. O. you will continue to direct yours to Portsmouth as you have done hertofore [sic]. I have not time write you any more I will write you all the news next week. I remain your Son

As Jacky has wrote you a letter and has not filled out the paper I concued [sic] to write a few lines we have some excitement in camp on account of the movements [ in Ten + ken – words struck out] of the yankees [sic] in Ten + Ken if semes [sic] that they are geting the advantage of us but I hope that it will turn out better yet I hope the men of Georgia and other states will turn out and ade [sic] us in our mighty stugel [sic] for freedom If we should be free from the foe of north we must fight we must die if need be well Pa I am well at this time I hope you all injoying [sic] same I do not call this a letter I will write in a few days again W J looks very well I must come to a close Geive [sic] my love to my Brothers and Sisters I remain as ever your True Son Good by [sic]
