As a city worker began filling a Sanitary Department truck with gasoline, the fuel ignited. The fire is quickly extinguished. Meanwhile, the military continues dynamiting homes along North Avenue toward Peachtree.

2,000 men from Fort McPherson arrive to assist firefighters and begin a bucket brigade using buckets from the King Hardware Company. They are also asked to direct traffic and manage the growing crowds.
